Via Fontana Fountain - Series of Rectangular Fountains Set Back Against a Wall with a Backdrop (“RAF”)

Let’s examine the different types of “R” rectangular fountains, starting with the best-known one on Via Fontana, the oldest one in the churchyard, and the most common ones on Via Fantoni, Via Ponte Dosso, and Via Luzzana; we’ll then look at the Art Nouveau fountain, now located at the playground, as well as historic fountains in private courtyards. In recent years, fountains of this type have been installed in the small square in front of the Church of Santa Maria and in the small square on Via Castello, replacing the historic ones that had been moved.

Dating from the 18th century and made of slate with granite corner pilasters, it features a carved panel with rounded corners at the center of the front face bearing the date: “F.R./MDCCLXXXIX/C.B.” Along the edge, you can feel the grooves used for sharpening various types of blades. The base is made of granite with rounded upper corners and supports the domed basin from which the two spouts emerge. Here we find the initials “C B” (Bienno community) separated by a cross.
