THE ERCOLI FORGE “PIRLÍ’” THAT NOW BELONGS TO THE MUNICIPALITY
This forge, belonged to Ercoli “Pirlì” Family, is a “scartadura” one for the production of buckets; it has been bought by the Municipality of Bienno and after has been renovated.
In the late seventies, before its closure, there has been fortunately done a documentary about the different phases of working and a picture story that shows it completely active yet.
Even in this case, it is interesting the placing of the construction by utilizing the soil level with the road at the top and the forge that bends down also depending on the inclination of the same Vaso Ré (the Rè Duct). It deserves to pay attention to the main façade with the large openings “sbadacoi” that were put also in private houses for the ventilation of the attic. It is extraordinary the inner spatiality of the forge room and its additional spaces arranged on two floors.
From the Ercoli forge there is a natural continuity with the near forge belonging to Orsatti Bortolo, which is a structure completely similar to it, that we might define quite mirror-like for the layout of the additional rooms on two floors and of the big forge room.
In fact, the perimetrical walls, that form a single façade both on the road and on the Vaso Ré (the Rè Duct), are continuous and they both have the big spatiality of the main room and the layout of the additional rooms on two floors, and should be of the seventeenth century as it is docmented by the inscription still preserved on a portal on the inside of the Orsatti forge.
Really the masonry weft of this forge, where can be noted wooden elements inserted among the stones in order to create a greater elasticity in the structure, is particularly interesting.
You have to observe how they are included with the number 1812 in the Napoleonic Map and shown exactly their wedge shape that follows the Vaso Ré (the Rè Duct).
